A GUIDE TO DIFFERENT TYPES OF ANKLE FOOT ORTHOSES

An Ankle Foot Orthosis (AFO) is a source of relief, improving mobility, stability, and comfort for individuals with various foot and ankle conditions, such as drop foot, posterior tibial tendon dysfunction (PTTD), or chronic ankle instability.

We offer a diverse range of ankle foot orthoses, including off-the-shelf and custom options like the Arizona Gauntlet, Thrive F3, and the Richie Brace®. This variety ensures that you can find the best solution for your unique needs.

What is an Ankle Foot Orthosis (AFO)?

An AFO is a prescribed medical brace designed to support the ankle and foot by controlling motion, enhancing stability, and improving gait mechanics. The design of these orthopaedic devices varies significantly depending on the individual's needs. Our products can be divided into the following categories: leather lace-up gauntlet, Carbon-Fiber AFO, and dual-hinged ankle support with orthotic.

Gauntlet AFO for Immobilization

We assess, cast, and fit for the Arizona Gauntlet, a custom-molded leather brace for individuals with severe ankle and foot conditions. It is particularly beneficial for Posterior tibial tendon dysfunction (PTTD), ankle arthritis, Charcot foot, and severe pronation issues.

Carbon-Fiber AFO for Dynamic Movement Assist

We offer options from F3 Thrive Orthopedics. These options are made from lightweight carbon fiber that sits underneath your foot, runs up your shin area, and attaches below the knee. They are most often recommended for those with foot drop due to neuromuscular disorders, stroke rehabilitation, forefoot amputation from diabetes, traumatic injury, or weak dorsiflexion musculature.

AFO Process

After being prescribed an ankle foot orthosis, you will:

  1. Book a virtual consultation with one of our Canadian Certified Pedorthists. During this consultation, the Pedorthist will take an overview of your diagnosis.

  2. Have an in-person assessment where a Pedorthist will examine your range of motion and analyze your full gait before determining which AFO option is right for you.

  3. If you require a custom ankle foot orthosis, you will have your foot and lower ankle cast to make a truly custom device. This process ensures a perfect fit and maximum comfort.

  4. Your cast will be sent off to be used to have your AFO made. This usually takes a couple of weeks.

  5. Come back to pick up your AFO where you will try it on, and one of our Pedorthists will make any necessary adjustments. This final step is crucial to ensure that your AFO fits perfectly and meets your needs.

With a variety of options available, our expertly trained staff can find the right solution to fit your specific needs!
